Darya Tkachenko: A Champion's Return to the Top
For years, Darya Tkachenko was a dominant force in international draughts, winning european and world titles. After stepping out of the spotlight, her life changed dramatically in 2022 when she fled the war in Ukraine. Settling in the Netherlands, she found new inspiration — and began an extraordinary comeback to the top of the game.
Growing up in Ukraine, Darya was drawn to draughts not just for the strategy, but for the spirit of competition. “We had many tournaments where you could immediately try things out, apply what you’d learned, and see the results,” she recalls. “I wouldn’t say I had a special talent only for draughts — I was also good at mathematics, physics, chemistry… I just liked learning.”
In Wageningen, surrounded by a supportive community, Darya’s second draughts career began to take shape. She trained hard, but also wisely. “Mental preparation is key,” she explains. “Finding the right balance becomes part of your routine. It’s something you develop on your way to becoming a grandmaster or winning a title — and then, it comes naturally.”
Her efforts soon paid off. Darya claimed two Dutch national championships and followed them up with a silver medal at the World Championship in Curaçao — a performance that earned her a shot at the reigning world champion, Viktoriia Motrichko. The title match took place in December 2024, and in a gripping battle full of tension and tactical depth, Darya’s experience made the difference. She reclaimed her fifth world title. One of her fondest memories of that match wasn’t a game or a move, but something much simpler. “I could ride my bicycle to the playing hall,” she says with a smile. “The Netherlands really was a good choice.”
It’s not just the competition that keeps her grounded. Darya finds joy in the Dutch way of life, one she’s grown to appreciate over many years. “I played one of my first world championships in 1997, in Doetinchem. Since then, I’ve been coming to the Netherlands almost every year,” she says. “My view of Dutch culture hasn’t really changed.” For Darya, success comes down to a mindset. “If you have the willingness to develop yourself, and the patience to learn new techniques and skills, you can get far,” she says. It’s a lesson she’s proven — not just once, but twice.
We’re proud to announce that the reigning Women’s World Champion will be among the top players at the upcoming Basalt World Championship Blitz & Superblitz in Hoogeveen. It’s an honor to see Darya back at the board.
